PFLAG FAMILY SCRAPBOOK
"LIVING OUR VALUES"
A powerful and hate-filled backlash against GLBT families is taking place all across our nation, as well as in our own backyard. People and groups claim that they're looking out for everyone's best interest in defending the "tradition" of marriage. But how does recognizing and valuing GLBT families diminish other families?
At a time when the debate is more divisive than ever, it's important to put a human face on the issue. We must all speak out as people of conscience, both GLBT people and those who love and support them. As more people come to know our families, they'll recognize that the myths and stereotypes just aren't true.
What's the very best way to introduce and validate our families? A FAMILY SCRAPBOOK! PFLAG wants to show and tell how much we value our families by putting together our own Family Scrapbook, "LIVING OUR VALUES". Your personal story is the most convincing tool we have for legislators, friends, neighbors and the public at large.
We hope to fill our scrapbooks with pages and pages of powerful personal stories to help dispel the rumors and myths being perpetrated on us and our loved ones: One story at a time, one picture at a time, showing and telling how GLBT families look and feel.
The scrapbooks will be circulated so that others can see us and read our stories. We hope that some of those important decision makers (ie, politicians) will be influenced to recognize that our family values are equal to all families.
We've provided a quick and easy way for you to participate. The story prompts provided are designed to help in case you'd like guidance; however, we don't want them to be obstacles. You don't have to follow them rigidly. If you'd rather write your story on your own, please feel free to do so. You can fill in your name or remain anonymous. It's entirely up to you. What we want are real stories from your heart.
Family photos would be greatly appreciated, if you're comfortable providing them! Just make sure that you're giving us a copy, not the original photo, since they'll be a permanent part of the scrapbook.
